Camp Near Fort Albany, VA
Sept 11, 1861

Dear Nelson,

Your letter came to camp yesterday and it gave me great pleasure to hear from you again. We are still
in our old camp where we have been since the battle of the 21st of July. We are expecting to move
camp every day and cross over to the City. There is talk of our battery and few others being left here
for the protection of the City, while the others advance in to VA. If so we will know in a few days. Troops
are pouring in to the City every day from the north; calvary, artillery and infantry. There is a great many
troops here, but how many I could not say; but it must be two hundred thousand. General McClelland
is on horseback all day visiting all the outposts. All troops drill twice a day except on Sunday.

I have got two months and ten days more to serve and then if I am still alive I will come home and see
you all. You say I must shut one eye when I fire. There is not much use of that for we have six rifle
guns that will throw a shot three miles!

I must close this as I have no more spare time. Remember me to all the brothers and sisters and friends.
Tell Josephine I will bring her a nice present when I come. Tell Nancy to write to me if she can keep
the babies from crying long enough. No more at present time...
Signed, William
